Day 2

Hi, How are ya?

The day began early with some people waking earlier than others, having heard the Muslim call to prayer at 4 a.m. Following breakfast, we were given a tour of St. George's school and then we were split up into small groups and sent into the classes. As the day went on our confidence grew and the classes became more enjoyable. Every group went to different age groups and played games with the kids and helped them out with their schoolwork and various lesson plans. The whiteboards and coloured paper were a great hit. We were all amazed at how enthusiastic and well-behaved the kids were. They were all so friendly and welcoming, however, we struggled to pronounce a lot of their names, so Orla, Emma R and the kids came up with nicknames for them such as Uki, Gummy Bear, Helicopter, Pac-Man, Hot Wheels and Shaniquwo.

We spent the break times playing football with the kids, having our hair plaited and watching their amazing gymnastic skills in action. We went back to St. Joseph's for food and returned for the extra after-school English classes. There we chatted with some of the older kids, about ourselves and pets. They were saddened to hear about the tragic death of Orla's pet squid, Paul, who sadly drowned. However they cheered up considerably when they heard about Orla's pet ostrich Johnny. After the lessons finished we stayed on to spend time in the school yard, befriending the "cool kids" from the block ;) . There we learnt several handshakes, played skipping and gave piggyback rides.  The exciting day ended with several funny incidents - the fascination with Orla's "silver hair" and Caroline's uncanny resemblance to Michael Jackson. Finally, Amy had the exciting experience of being proposed to around 6 times but sadly, she declined. All in all, it was an action packed day!
